I spent two days photographing Vegas and thinking about what we value as a culture. Everything in this town - everything salable - is about fantasy and artifice. But then maybe that's true of everything everywhere, to a greater or lesser degree. Maybe Las Vegas is more genuine than other places because there is no pretense for human behavior: the city knows what we want and it delivers.
As I said to Katie on the phone the other day, I haven't yet processed all that I've seen in the past three weeks. We're moving fast, and experiencing things on a very superficial level. But at the same time, I tend to respond to things viscerally and from an intuitive place. Sometimes I'm completely off - base, often, not. This is one reason photography works for me as a medium. Often I respond better to something completely new than  if I have a chance to revisit a subject, physically or intellectually.
So here are some first impressions, as I experienced them.
